Rehabilitated Sharp-Shinned Hawk released back into the wild

In early October in the town of Mono, a local storage company owner called the Ontario SPCA Orangeville & District Animal Centre for assistance when they became concerned there was a bird in distress.

After receiving the call, the Orangeville animal centre informed the Town of Orangeville’s animal control and an officer responded to the call. Upon arrival, she observed it was a hawk that had an injury to his wing which left him unable to fly. As a result, the bird appeared malnourished and was in need of immediate help.

The animal control officer transferred the hawk to the Shades of Hope Wildlife Refuge in Georgina that day.

Identified as a Sharp-Shinned Hawk, Shades of Hope Wildlife Refuge says he had a fracture in both the radius and ulna left wing. Fortunately, they said the bones were fairly well aligned, and they were able to wrap the wing for two weeks to allow for healing.

After a few weeks of healing, and some time in their flyway, Shades of Hope determined our friend was ready to be released back home. Animal control was called in to assist with the release.
