A community comes together to help a 3-week-old puppy found on the side of the road

When a tiny puppy, thought to only be about three weeks old, was found on the side of a road in Cornwall, police reached out to the Ontario SPCA Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry Animal Centre to see if we could help.

We weren’t sure how this pint-size Chihuahua-type pup ended up on the side of a busy road, but we were relieved to discover he didn’t have any injuries. Working together with police, we got this little guy to a local veterinarian to be checked out. The examination revealed that, despite the ordeal, this little guy was no worse for wear.

It turns out that Tanner, as we named him, had been in the care of a local man who suddenly found himself with no place to live. Homeless, he put everything he had on a trailer he towed behind his bicycle. Unfortunately, he didn’t notice when Tanner got out of the trailer and was left behind.

Tanner’s mom was also located. To ensure mom and pup got the care they needed, we offered to look after the pair until the man can get back on his feet and find a new place to live. Once Tanner is old enough, his owner has asked that we place him up for adoption to find him a good home through our animal centre.

Thanks to fast-acting police and our dedicated staff, this pair is now resting comfortably and doing well. And by connecting with their owner, we’re able to help someone when they’re down to ensure they have the resources available to provide the best life possible for their pets.
