The holidays are upon us! It’s all about iAdopt for the Holidays here at the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society. We want to share tips with you today about adopting during the holidays.

In this podcast, Senior Director of Shelter Health and Wellness, Dave Wilson, joins us to highlight tips you need to know as a pet owner during the holidays.

One of his main points? The biggest thing to think about, he says, is sources of stress. During the holidays there’s lots of excess energy and noise – so it’s important to make sure pets have a safety zone. This is so that they can have their space, away from excitement. For cats, this might be a little cat carrier, and for dogs could be a mud room or bathroom with their favourite items inside – treats and toys – to make it more comfortable.

Listen to the podcast for more great adoption tips for preparing your home for a new furry friend!

iAdopt for the Holidays

Very few things in life can compare to the unconditional love and companionship given by our animal friends, especially when those friends have been given a second chance through adoption. iAdopt for the Holidays is a national campaign focused on positive, real-life pet adoption stories. All as a means to encourage others to adopt and experience a similar happy ending.

This is quite the flashback! Four years ago we interviewed Temple Grandin to hear about her life with autism and passion for animal science. We wanted to bring it back out this week.

Doctor Temple Grandin was diagnosed with autism as a child. She went on to pursue work in psychology and animal science. Listen to learn more about her life, what led her to her career, and the work she does to improve animal welfare for livestock.

Listen now!

Dr. Temple Grandin

Grandin believes having autism gives her the ability to understand animals in a way most other people don’t.

“My cognitive style is more like how an animal is,” she says, explaining how she thinks more visually than most people.

As she grew up she says she started learning how people around her looked at the world differently.

“When I was a teenager I thought everybody thought in pictures the same way I did, I didn’t know that my thinking was different,” says Grandin.

Grandin describes asking people to think about church steeples, and how most people see just one, standard image. For her, she says she can see countless different steeples when she has that thought.

This different kind of thinking led Grandin towards consulting the livestock industry. Her goal was to create the development of humane livestock holdings for cattle and other livestock.

At the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society, we strive to find each and every animal that comes into our animal centres, a safe and loving home. Sometimes community cats end up in our centres and cannot be returned to their original colony site, for various reasons. Once these cats are deemed “unadoptable”, due to their lack of socialization, there are limited options for them. The Ontario SPCA believes in finding an alternative home for these cats, by giving them “jobs” as working cats!

These cats are healthy, sterilized, vaccinated, microchipped, ear tipped and in need of a new, non-traditional home environment. Some examples of these new homes we are looking for could include barns, stables, auto repair shops, woodworking shops, wineries, breweries, greenhouses/nurseries/garden centres, churches, storage facilities/warehouses. Working cats are not suited to be your typical indoor pets and, as unsocialized animals, they have no desire to be lap cats. These are working cats, former street cats who are used to outdoor life, prefer minimal to no human contact, and who will happily tend to any mouse, mole or vermin problems for the small cost of a bowl of cat food and water set out daily, as needed veterinary care and shelter in a garage, barn etc.

And because we spay/neuter these cats before they leave the Ontario SPCA, adopters never need to worry about endless litters of kittens!

Interested in adopting a working cat? Read the FAQ on our website and apply to adopt at the bottom of this page!

Cassandra is an employee of the Ontario SPCA Provincial Education and Animal Centre. When she heard of a cat at the centre who needed a special home that would allow him to work, she offered her barn as a resource.
