You may even already have the ingredients kicking around in your kitchen. Another great part is these pup-cakes can be enjoyed by your kids, too!

Now, you may be asking what a “pup-cake” is.  Well, it’s exactly as it sounds – a delicious treat for pups made in a muffin tin, baked in the oven and 100% drool-worthy!

We’re sure this recipe from our friends at Milk-Bone® will get your dog’s tail wagging. View the recipe here. This recipe along with some cupcakes for humans can be found on our recipes page at nationalcupcakeday.ca

Pup-cakesDoggy Tested

We tested this recipe with four-year-old Lola, a Beagle-Bulldog mix with an appetite, who supervised the baking of this recipe. With her Beagle nose, she knew she was in for a sweet surprise as soon as the peanut butter jar cracked open!

It didn’t take long to mix up all the ingredients for the pup-cakes and get them in the oven. Once cooled, our taste tester Lola stepped in. She wasn’t thrilled to be asked to sit and give paw before receiving her pup-cake – although she happily obliged after getting a taste of these delicious pup-cakes!

National Cupcake Day

So why is now a great time to bake pup-cakes or cupcakes you ask?  Because by registering, fundraising and baking for National Cupcake Day™, you are raising crucially needed funds for animals in need.

National Cupcake Day™, presented by Milk-Bone® and Robin Hood®, is coming up on February 28 and this year marks the 10-year anniversary of this delicious event in support of participating SPCAs, humane societies and rescue groups across Canada. Even though we can’t WAIT to bake a difference for animals in need in support of National Cupcake Day™ presented by Milk-Bone® and Robin Hood®, we have a whole lot of howl-iday baking to do first!

Baking tips for the Holiday season

National Cupcake Day™ kicks off on January 4th, 2022, but while we count down the days, we wanted to share with you some of our favourite baking tips, just in time for your holiday parties, dinners, and bake sales:

  • We know, we know. When we’re baking cookies, it’s tempting to make your dough and either dig in or pop it directly into the oven! But letting your dough chill in the fridge for an hour, or even overnight, can make a world of difference! Chilling your dough makes it less sticky and easier to form the perfect cookie.
  • If you’ve made your way to the kitchen only to notice with horror you forgot to let your butter soften outside of the fridge, cut it into small cubes and let sit for 15 minutes. You’ll have room temperature butter ready to be baked!
  • Between double boilers and stacked pots, sometimes melting chocolate seems like more trouble than it’s worth. But did you know you can make it easy by melting your chocolate in the microwave? All you have to do is break your chocolate into small pieces, heat it in 15-30 seconds increments in a microwavable bowl, and keep stirring and mixing every increment until the chocolate is liquefied and smooth!
  • If you’re making cupcakes – our personal favourite – and you run out of batter before filling your tray of cups, fill the remaining cups with water! This will encourage your cupcakes to bake more evenly.
  • If you’re prepping your cookies early, and trying to make them last for that holiday party a couple weeks away, pop a slice of bread into the cookie tin! It’ll keep your cookies nice and chewy, like they’re fresh out of the oven.
  • We’ve all been there- you’re making cookies with sprinkles, only to find your counters more sprinkled than the treats. To make your sprinkles really stick, lightly brush your cookies with a layer of heated corn syrup and sprinkle away!

We hope that these tricks will make your holiday baking a little easier, and that you might’ve even learned something that will help you during National Cupcake Day! While your next baking creation is rising in the oven, check out our NEW National Cupcake Day  video!

The National Cupcake Day campaign launches January 4th, and finishes on February 28th. Keep an eye on our National Cupcake Day social medias for more information! Hoppy howl-idays!

It’s officially the sweetest day of the year! Today is National Cupcake Day™, and SPCA’s, Humane Societies, and rescues from across the country are still accepting donations that will go directly into helping the animals in their local communities.

We’ve already been hearing success stories from across Canada thanks to your generous donations! Because of donors who support National Cupcake Day™, one of our participating societies was able to save the lives of not one, not three, not five, but six cats all at once!

Cupcake and her kittens

After receiving a call from a local vet clinic about a birthing cat, one local animal centre bravely stepped up to take responsibility for the mama who was in dire need of surgery. She had already given birth to four kittens over the course of two days but was unable to continue the birth herself. It was not certain if the mama cat or any remaining kittens would survive the surgery as she was in grave condition.

Soon afterwards, the clinic delivered some outstanding news. Mom came through surgery well and there was a baby they discovered that was still alive! After recovering in the animal centre, the mama and her five kittens were placed into a foster home, where they continue to grow healthier and stronger every day.

And the sweetest part? In honour of the fundraising event that provided the funds used to saved that new mom’s life, we have named the mama Cupcake, and her babies Sprinkles, Sugar, Pudding, Marshmallow and Candy. If you have not already, please consider making a donation to the participating society of your choice in National Cupcake Day™ before our 2021 event has come to an official close! There are thousands of stories across Canada just like Cupcake’s, and so many more animals that can be helped with just a small donation.

Sincerely, THANK YOU for making National Cupcake Day™ a tremendous success again in 2021. Thank you to all the local bakeries who generously donated proceeds from their sales, thank you to every single person who made cupcakes and participated in our first ever Decorating Contest, thank you to everyone who fundraised and donated and thank you to all of you for caring about animals like Cupcake and her kittens.

Enjoy National Cupcake Day™, and remember, calories don’t count when you are enjoying a sweet treat while supporting animals in need!
