The Ontario SPCA seeks a new location in Sudbury for its mobile spay/neuter unit
Sudbury, ON (December 19, 2023) – The Ontario SPCA and Humane Society is appealing to the public for a new location for its SPCA Mobile Animal Wellness Services unit, a 38-foot trailer that provides spay/neuter and wellness services to animals in underserved communities.
Throughout the 2023 season, the Ontario SPCA Mobile Animal Wellness Services unit was stationed inside the Capreol Fire Station, a temporary space generously made possible by the City of Sudbury to allow the Society to pilot this initiative. A total of 417 spay/neuter surgeries were performed, and 226 vaccines were administered on the mobile unit this year to help keep animals with the families who love them.
A new location is being sought for the mobile unit for the 2024 season. At 38’ long and 12’ high, the mobile unit requires an indoor space that is at least 20’x40’ in size, ideally in a centralized location that is accessible by bus. A registered charity, the Ontario SPCA is hopeful a community partner may come forward with a new location for the mobile unit.
“If you have a location that could house the SPCA Mobile Animal Wellness Services unit, we’d love to hear from you,” says Dr. Stephanie Black, Chief Veterinary Officer for the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society. “Being able to keep the mobile unit in the Greater Sudbury area will help break down some of the barriers people have in getting their animals veterinary care and will help reduce pet overpopulation in the North.”
The Ontario SPCA Mobile Animal Wellness Services unit was made possible in 2019 thanks to a Pet Valu “Companions for Change™” sponsorship. It provides spay/neuter services, general wellness examinations, and end-of-life care when necessary and requested by the family.
